With a rise of COVID cases in Delaware, a Dover International Speedway request to allow spectators refused by the state

The State of Delaware is not one of the major COVID-19 hot spots in the country. But a rise in the number of cases has officials very concerned. So, when Dover International Speedway made a request to allow a limited number of spectators into the track for a weekend of racing from Aug. 21-23, the state rejected the plan.

“We submitted a comprehensive plan to state officials outlining our planned procedures and protocols for keeping our fans safe throughout our August race weekend,” said Mike Tatoian, Dover International Speedway’s president and CEO, in a release. “Unfortunately, due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, the decision was made to not allow fans. We understand it, and while we are disappointed, we also realize that we need to err on the side of caution and yield to the opinions of public health experts to help reduce the further spread of COVID-19.”

FROM TWO TO SIX

Dover originally scheduled just two races in August, one each in Cup and Xfinity Series. But when the season was interrupted in March, NASCAR revamped its calendar and the track will now host six, including Gander Trucks and ARCA Menards.

Some states have allowed small number of motorsports fans to see races live, and NASCAR had hoped to do the same at Dover. A recent event at Bristol drew roughly 20,000 people for a track that can seat in excess of 160,000. While Dover has a capacity of 85,000, permitting some 10,000 would not have been too much to ask, but Delaware cited the interest of public safety and health concerns as the reasoning behind denying the application.

All six races will take place and here is the schedule:

FRIDAY 8/21
ARCA Menards ‘General Tire 125’ @ 2:00 p.m.
Gander Trucks ‘KDI Office Technology 200’ @ 5: 00 p.m.

SATURDAY 8/22
XFINITY ‘Dryden 200’ @ 12:30 p.m.
Cup Series ‘Dryden 311’ @ 4:00 p.m.

SUNDAY 8/23
XFINITY ‘Dryden 200’ @ 1:00 p.m.
Cup Series ‘Dryden 311’ @ 4:00 p.m.
